Date: May 2, 2025Bengaluru - BEML Ltd., a mining and construction manufacturer, has unveiled the largest indigenously designed and developed electric rope shovel, the BRS21. This cutting-edge mining equipment was officially handed over at Nigahi Mines, Singrauli, in the presence of top executives from Coal India Ltd (CIL), Northern Coalfields Ltd (NCL), and BEML.
The BRS21 rope shovel, weighing 720 tonnes and equipped with a massive 21 cubic meter bottom dump bucket, represents a technological breakthrough in surface mining. Entirely engineered and manufactured in India, it offers a powerful, eco-friendly solution for large-scale overburden removal in opencast mining. Its fully electric drive eliminates exhaust emissions, supporting India’s global sustainability commitments by saving approximately 189 tons of CO₂ annually per machine.
Mr. Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director of BEML, said, “The successful creation of the BRS21 within 24 months underscores BEML’s engineering prowess and marks a defining moment for India’s coal sector. This machine is a testament to the Prime Minister’s vision of a self-reliant India and introduces a new era of sustainable mining.”
Mr. P.M. Prasad, CMD, CIL, said, “The launch of the BRS21 is a moment of immense pride for India's mining sector and a significant step towards environmentally sustainable mining practices. With this remarkable achievement, we are opening a new chapter in green mining.”
The BRS21 features a Siemens IGBT-based AC Drive System with zero-emission electric operation, rugged durability, and real-time monitoring. It includes predictive maintenance sensors, a centralized lubrication system, and an ergonomic cabin with LED lighting for operator comfort. Safety is enhanced with 360-degree vision and fatigue monitoring. This achievement highlights BEML’s engineering strength and reduces India’s dependence on imported mining equipment, making the BRS21 a key strategic asset.
This launch marks a new era for India’s mining industry - one that is greener, more efficient, and proudly self-reliant.
