CATL Launches Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery

Ningde, China- Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), a manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, as well as battery management systems. Launched the Freevoy Super Hybrid Battery, the first hybrid vehicle battery with a pure electric range over 400 km and 4C superfast charging—marking a new era for high-capacity EREV and PHEV batteries.

As a transformative solution, Freevoy redefines PHEV and EREV batteries

With EREVs (extended range electric vehicles) and PHEVs (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) gaining prominence in the new energy vehicle market, consumers have increasingly expressed frustration over their unsatisfactory pure electric experiences with such vehicles. Short range, slow charging, and reduced low-temperature performance have emerged as critical challenges demanding immediate solutions.

CATL's Freevoy battery for hybrid vehicles of EREVs and PHEVs, powers a week’s commute on one charge and offers over 280 km of range in 10 minutes, eliminating range anxiety.

Mr. Gao Huan, CATL's CTO, highlighted the advanced technology behind Freevoy’s impressive range and ultra-fast charging at its launch. Freevoy features a surface modification for its cathode material, a high-voltage electrolyte creating a nano-protective layer, and high-activity particles that boost lithium-ion transport. These innovations, along with an upgraded BMS algorithm and SOC model, increase SOC control accuracy by 40% and pure electric utilization by over 10%, achieving 400+ km in electric range. CATL's predictive charge-discharge analysis and multi-level power control also enhance hybrid power by 20%.

CATL’s Freevoy integrates 4C ultra-fast charging, delivering over 280 km on a 10-minute charge, thanks to advanced technologies like cathode fast-ion conductor coating, second-gen fast-charging graphite, and a multi-layered electrode design. The sodium-ion battery technology in Freevoy also enhances low-temperature performance, enabling discharge at -40°C, charging at -30°C, and smooth driving down to -20°C.

Through CATL's AB battery system, Freevoy combines sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries to improve low-temp range by 5% and system control precision by 30%, adding over 10 km in pure electric range. The BMS technology ensures seamless performance by targeting zonal management across varying temperatures.

Freevoy’s reliability is built on rigorous evaluation, material selection, and a data-driven early warning system. Already featured in vehicles by Li Auto, AVATR, and others, the battery is set to power 30 models from Geely, Chery, and more by 2025. Freevoy’s launch underscores CATL's dedication to advancing hybrid vehicle technology and driving comprehensive electrification.
