Cummins acquires First Mode’s hybrid mining and rail assets, advancing decarbonization with hydrogen and battery solutions.

Columbus, Indiana - Cummins Inc., a power generation product manufacturer, has acquired First Mode assets, including hybrid mining and rail product lines and its full IP portfolio covering hydrogen and battery powertrain solutions. This marks the first commercially available retrofit hybrid system for mining equipment, lowering total cost of ownership (TCO) and accelerating decarbonization in operations.
Cummins is also acquiring First Mode’s commercial portfolio, along with its manufacturing and technical teams in Australia, the U.S., and Chile. First Mode will continue supporting customers during the transition and remains committed to shipping products in Q1.
This acquisition reinforces Cummins dedication to advancing decarbonization solutions, expanding its product portfolio to help customers transition to a lower-carbon future. With this integration, First Mode will operate within Cummins’ Power Systems industrial segment, driving innovation in sustainable mining and rail technologies.
