Cummins Launches B7.2 Diesel Engine for Trucks

Indiana, United States - Cummins Inc., a power technology company, has unveiled new B7.2 diesel engine for medium-duty and vocational trucks on March 5, 2025 at NTEA Work Truck Week in Indianapolis. Producing 240-340 horsepower and 650-1,000 lb-ft of torque, it will enter full production in North America in 2027 at the Rocky Mount plant, North Carolina.

The B7.2 diesel engine expands displacement to 7.2 liters, offering a broader torque range and greater adaptability for various applications and duty cycles. As the latest addition to the B Series under the HELM platform, it is designed to reduce emissions, enhance fuel efficiency, and accommodate alternative fuels. HELM - standing for “Higher Efficiency, Lower Emissions, and Multiple Fuels”, helps customers meet future emissions standards and sustainability goals.

Mr. Jose Samperio, Vice president, North America On-Highway, said, “Our customers have used the B-Series engine for more than 40 years and rely on it every day to meet their needs. It was important that we offer the reliability and performance that they have come to expect, while also creating an engine that is built to last for the future.”

The new B7.2 engine is designed for various medium-duty and vocational applications, including buses, pickup and delivery, utility trucks, refuse collection, and towing. It also complies with upcoming EPA emissions regulations for light- and medium-duty trucks, set to take effect with the 2027 model year.

The B7.2 engine features automatic engine shutdown and stop-start capability to reduce carbon emissions, a compression-release engine brake, and an extended oil-drain-interval pan. It also includes Acumen smart computing hardware for digital connectivity and access to various applications, along with the Cummins Maintenance Monitor for enhanced performance tracking.

Mr. Brett Merritt, Vice president and president, Engine Business, said, “The B7.2 brings the latest technology and advancements to one of our most proven platforms. Combined with the rest of our medium-duty lineup, our customers will have the right engine choices to fit their business needs, with the power and dependability they have come to expect from Cummins.”
