Delhi- Delhi has added 200 new zero-emission electric buses to its public transport fleet, taking the city’s total number of electric buses beyond 5,000. Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Chief Minister Rekha Gupta flagged off the buses at the Delhi University Sports Complex.
Mr. Sandhu said the initiative is both environment-friendly and citizen-centric, while Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted that the expansion is aimed at making public transport cleaner, safer and more convenient. Delhi now operates more than 5,000 electric buses, with its overall bus fleet reaching around 6,800 vehicles.
The new low-floor, air-conditioned electric buses form part of the government’s plan to fully electrify the DTC fleet and expand Delhi’s total bus fleet to around 14,000 vehicles by 2028-29.
A new Delhi-Karnal interstate electric bus service was also launched. Five air-conditioned e-buses will operate 10 trips daily in each direction, covering locations including Singhu Border, Murthal and Panipat. The fare between Kashmere Gate and Karnal has been fixed at approximately ₹212.
Delhi has also introduced 56 dedicated Ladies Special electric bus services to improve safe and convenient travel for women. These include 30 trips across 15 high-demand routes and 26 University Ladies Special trips on 13 routes. Women police personnel, Home Guards and female staff will be deployed on these services, while panic buttons will be connected to the Delhi Police 112 emergency response system.
