Pune- EKA Mobility has entered Zanzibar’s public transport market with the launch of its 12-metre electric buses. The first fleet was officially flagged off by Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar.

The initial deployment includes 15 electric buses, which are scheduled to begin commercial operations on 1 August 2026. A total of 35 buses has been ordered under the programme, while the fleet is expected to expand to 150 EKA electric buses by the end of 2026.

The project is designed to support Zanzibar’s transition towards cleaner public transport while also creating local employment and developing technical expertise in electric vehicle operations.

Mr. Vijay Yelne, President – Export Marketing & SCM at EKA Mobility, said the launch validates the company’s technology and its ability to deliver Indian-manufactured electric mobility solutions to international markets. He added that Africa will be an important growth market in EKA Mobility’s global expansion strategy.

The ceremony was attended by senior Zanzibar government officials, Bishwajit Dey, High Commissioner of India to Tanzania, and representatives from the Zanzibar Social Security Fund, Global Rapid Transport and EKA Mobility.

As part of the programme, EKA Mobility and Global Rapid Transport will train local personnel in vehicle operation, maintenance, software systems and safety. The Zanzibar Social Security Fund is also supporting operational readiness and capacity-building activities.

Built on EKA Mobility’s electric vehicle platform, the buses are designed for urban public transport applications. The deployment strengthens the company’s international presence in the electric commercial vehicle market and marks another step in the global expansion of Indian electric mobility technology.
