Hercal has acquired the Iberian Peninsula’s first Liebherr R 980 Demolition excavator, setting a new standard for high-reach demolition in Spain and Portugal.
Date: July 1, 2025Terrassa, Spain – Hercal., a catalan construction and demolition company, has taken a major step forward in its demolition capabilities by acquiring the Liebherr R 980 Demolition excavator, the first of its kind in the Iberian Peninsula. With this move, Hercal not only expands its machinery fleet but also sets a new benchmark for high-reach demolition in Spain and Portugal.
Positioned as the flagship machine in Hercal’s lineup, the Liebherr R 980 Demolition represents a significant qualitative leap in the company’s service offerings.
Mr. Marcos Calleja, CEO of Hercal, said, “Our goal is to be at the forefront of circular demolition. To do that, it’s essential to have powerful, reliable, state-of-the-art machinery capable of handling complex projects with the highest standards of safety and quality.”
With an operating weight of 200 tonnes and a reach exceeding 60 metres, the R 980 Demolition is purpose-built for extreme high-altitude and mechanical demolition tasks where speed and performance are critical. The machine can operate with 15-tonne attachments at a height of 20 metres and is ideal for challenging demolition tasks ranging from 20 to 40 metres, and beyond.
Mr. Jose Calleja, General Manager of Hercal, said, “This machine marks a major milestone in our growth. It strengthens our commitment to sustainable, efficient demolition and enables us to offer more tailored responses to our clients’ increasingly sophisticated needs.”
Manufactured by Liebherr-France SAS, the R 980 Demolition is available in four reach configurations - 21, 26, 36, and 55 metres. The shorter versions can operate with 15-tonne tools, while the longer-reach configurations handle 7 and 3 tonnes respectively. Each machine undergoes extensive development, testing, and customization to ensure it meets the exact demands of modern demolition sites.
Hercal’s investment in the Liebherr R 980 Demolition supports its focus on sustainability and innovation. The company already operates a robust fleet of Liebherr machines for demolition and earthmoving, including at its H-ZERO waste recovery facility. Hercal continues to grow while upholding its family business values and commitment to safety, quality, and environmental responsibility.
