Tokyo, Japan- Honda Motor Co. Ltd., a manufacturer of automobiles, will debut a Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell truck concept at the Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Expo in Las Vegas, on May 20, 2024. This marks the start of a new demonstration project aimed at future production of fuel cell-powered products for the North American market. Honda is also seeking new business collaborations to expand its hydrogen business.
The company has identified four core domains for the initial utilization of its new fuel cell system: fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), commercial fuel cell vehicles, stationary power stations and construction machinery.
Honda's Class 8 truck concept, featuring advanced fuel cell systems co-developed with General Motors (GM), will debut at the ACT Expo. Produced at a joint venture facility in Michigan, these new systems enhance performance, double durability, and cut costs by two-thirds. Honda targets their use in FCEVs, commercial vehicles, power stations, and construction machinery. Additionally, Harty will detail Honda's hydrogen plans in a keynote at the Ultra Clean Heavy-Vehicle Summit on May 22nd, 2024.

Honda's Class 8 truck concept measures 8,000 mm length, 2,400 mm width, and 4,000 mm height. It has a Gross Combination Weight (GCW) of 37,273 kg, with a top speed of 70 mph and a driving range of 400 miles at GCW. Powered by three 80 kW fuel cell systems, it also features an 82 kg H2 tank and a 120-kWh battery.
Mr. Ryan assistant vice president, sustainability & business development, American Honda Motor Co., Inc, said “Commercial vehicles, including Class 8 trucks, where fuel cells offer the best zero-emission replacement for existing diesel applications, are a key part of Honda’s broad hydrogen business strategy.” He added that the company is actively seeking business collaborations and customers to help bring these solutions to market.
