Hyundai and Kia Unveil IGIS to Track and Manage Carbon Emissions Across Vehicle Lifecycles
Date: December 31, 2024
SEOUL, South Korea - Hyundai Motor Company., and Kia Corporation., an automotive manufacturer, have introduced the Integrated Greenhouse Gas Information System (IGIS), an advanced platform for monitoring, measuring, and managing carbon emissions across the entire vehicle lifecycle.
Using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, IGIS offers precise tracking and measurement of carbon emissions throughout a vehicle's entire lifecycle. This systematic approach ensures accurate and consistent data collection for comprehensive emissions assessment.
IGIS tracks energy use in global production, collects LCA data from suppliers to calculate carbon footprints, and uses blockchain for secure, tamper-proof data. This ensures transparent and reliable emissions management with high data accuracy.
Mr. Eunsook Jin, Executive Vice President and Head of ICT Division at Hyundai Motor and Kia, said, “In our mission to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045, we are taking a significant leap forward with the development of IGIS. Through IGIS, we are intensifying our efforts to build a responsible value chain, demonstrating remarkable innovation in the automotive industry.”
The launch of IGIS marks a major step in Hyundai Motor and Kia’s journey toward carbon neutrality, building on the 2023 introduction of the Supplier CO2 Emission Monitoring System (SCEMS). IGIS integrates existing systems to streamline data management and improve operational efficiency.
IGIS strengthens Hyundai and Kia’s ability to adapt to global environmental regulations and meet certifications like CDP and RE100. This platform underscores their commitment to sustainability, leveraging advanced technologies to drive environmental responsibility and a greener future in the automotive industry.
