Hyundai Motor Group Names Michael Kleine Head of Washington, D.C. Office

SEOUL/WASHINGTON, D.C - Hyundai Motor Group, an automotive conglomerate, has appointed Michael Kleine as Head of its Washington, D.C. Office, effective immediately.

In his new role, Kleine will lead the Group’s engagement with U.S. federal government stakeholders and oversee its public policy, strategic advisory and government affairs activities across the United States.

The appointment reflects Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to strengthening its relationship with the U.S. government as it continues to expand investments in American manufacturing, technological innovation and the wider automotive ecosystem.

Kleine brings more than 25 years of diplomatic and public-policy experience to Hyundai Motor Group. During his career with the U.S. Department of State, he held senior leadership roles across several key Asia-Pacific markets.

In Indonesia, he served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta. In South Korea, he was Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, where he contributed to the conclusion and ratification of the U.S.–Korea Free Trade Agreement. He also managed economic and diplomatic initiatives in Australia, Laos and Vietnam.

Kleine additionally served as Senior Advisor for Korea and Japan Trade Policy at the Office of the United States Trade Representative, helping shape important trade-policy decisions affecting the region.

In recognition of his public service, he received the Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Service in 2024.

Before entering diplomatic service, Kleine practised law in Washington, D.C. He holds a Juris Doctor from Duke University School of Law and a Master of Science in National Security Strategy from the National War College.

His experience across law, trade policy, diplomacy and international relations is expected to support Hyundai Motor Group’s strategic priorities and strengthen its engagement with government and industry stakeholders in Washington, D.C.
