International Participation Highlights Production-Ready Solutions for Diverse Challenges, with Infrastructure Key to Climate-Friendly Commercial Vehicle Rollout.
Date: September 17, 2024Frankfurt am Main, Germany- IAA TRANSPORTATION 2024., officially kicked off in Hannover on Tuesday. The event was opened by Germany's Federal Minister of Transport, Volker Wissing, Lower Saxony’s Minister President Stephan Weil, Hannover’s Mayor Belit Onay, and VDA President Hildegard Müller.
In her opening speech, Ms. Müller highlighted the automotive industry's commitment to transformation through significant investments and innovations. At IAA TRANSPORTATION, she noted, "We have developed and are producing climate-neutral mobility solutions. Now we must get these vehicles on the road."
She emphasized the urgent need for infrastructure development, particularly hydrogen refuelling stations and expanded charging points. Müller pointed out that many freight forwarders face delays due to local grid capacity issues, stating, "It's clear that decisive action is needed to address these challenges."
Dr. Volker Wissing, Federal Minister for Digital and Transport, said, “IAA Transportation not only provides a prominent stage for the latest technologies and developments in the commercial vehicle industry. It is also a great showcase for the innovative power of the transport sector and related industries. Most importantly, it shows how committed this sector is to becoming more climate-friendly and sustainable. By 2030, one-third of the mileage in heavy road freight transport is expected to be electric. In future, we must succeed in moving the increasing volume of goods while simultaneously reducing the CO2 emissions of freight transport. To this end, we have now launched a nationwide fast-charging network for trucks in Germany. This fast-charging network is critical for the future of the flow of goods across Europe.”
Müller urged politicians to adopt a strategic industrial policy to meet climate goals, emphasizing the need for effective project management. She called for faster review processes for heavy commercial vehicles by 2026 and highlighted the urgent need to expand charging and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure alongside grid enhancements.
The German automotive industry is focused on investment and innovation, advocating for technological openness. "IAA TRANSPORTATION 2024 demonstrates that the future of mobility lies in a mix of technologies, including electromobility, hydrogen propulsion, and digital solutions," Müller stated.
This year's IAA TRANSPORTATION features nearly 1,700 exhibitors from 41 countries, a growth of over 21% from 2022's 1,402 exhibitors. The event has expanded to occupy two additional halls, with international exhibitors rising from 61.8% to a record 72.3%.
Over the next few days, attendees will see more than 145 world premieres focused on alternative drive technologies, including electrification and hydrogen. Manufacturers are showcasing innovations that aim for a sustainable future in transportation, alongside advancements in autonomous driving, connected mobility, battery cell production, cargo bikes for last-mile delivery, and AI challenges. A key theme is the critical need for charging infrastructure to support climate-friendly transport solutions.
On press day, over 80 press conferences were held by exhibitors from 25 countries, highlighting IAA TRANSPORTATION's role as a vital international platform for logistics and transport innovations.
The event showcases renowned companies like Bosch, Daimler Truck, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, alongside innovative newcomers such as Kia and Tesla. IAA TRANSPORTATION will offer guided test drives of the latest zero-emission commercial vehicles on both exhibition grounds and public roads.
On September 21 and 22, the Drivers’ and Family Weekend invites the public to enjoy interactive activities, a Truck Racing Show, music events, and truck driving schools. Everyone is welcome to explore the latest in the commercial vehicle industry and enjoy a fun-filled day.
Join us in Hannover from September 17 to 22 for this international showcase of transport and logistics innovations!
