Delhi- The Indian Army has received a hydrogen fuel cell bus under its collaboration with Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOCL) for demonstration trials of this Hydrogen Fuel Cell bus technology. The Indian Army is Known for this commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Army and IOCL, witnessed by General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff, and Mr. Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil. During the event, the Indian Army received a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus, marking the start of a beneficial partnership aimed at fostering innovation and advancing sustainable transport solutions.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology provides a clean and efficient alternative by converting hydrogen gas into electricity, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct, ensuring zero emissions. The hydrogen fuel cell bus, with a seating capacity of 37 passengers, offers a mileage of 250-300 km on a full 30 kg onboard tank of hydrogen fuel.

On March 21, 2023, the Indian Army made history by signing the first MoU with NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd for green hydrogen-based microgrid power plants along the Northern borders. A pilot project at Chushul will install a 200-kW green hydrogen-based microgrid, ensuring round-the-clock clean electricity for troops in challenging terrain and extreme climates.

In the past year,Tata Motors had won the tender from IOCL to Provide 15 units of FCEV Buses to evaluate the potential of hydrogen based PEM Fuel cell Technology in India.
