Irizar received 11 trams from Pays Basque, featuring ewith safety and battery systems. The region also ordered more trams to expand lines and increase frequency, improving public transport.
Date: June 8, 2024Ormaiztegi, Spain- Irizar Sociedad Cooperativa., (lrizar) a Spanish-based manufacturer of luxury buses and coaches, has received the 11 units of Lrizar ie tram order from the transport union of the Communauté d’agglomération du Pays Basque in France, which is known as the Tram’bus in the Basque Country. They have ordered seven 18-metre-long vehicles and four 12 metre Long vehicle.
In 2019, the 100% Basque Tram'bus, made in Gipuzkoa, was inaugurated in Bayonne-Anglet-Biarritz, now recorded 12 million passengers. Orleans, France, embraced Irizar e-mobility's solutions with a second order of seven ie trams in June last year, bringing the city's total to 36 units.
The improved Irizar ie tram boasts new features and safety enhancements, including GSR2 ADAS standards for cybersecurity. It also features a new generation of 470 kWh batteries with lower consumption and extended range. The new batteries in the Irizar ie tram are compatible with quick charging infrastructure and offer increased onboard energy. The lighter and more compact drive system weighs 26% less, while the new digital HMI is highly customizable.
The transport union of the Communauté d’agglomération du Pays Basque has ordered new trams to expand line T2 of the Tram’bus and increase frequency on line T1. T2's route will extend by five kilometers to include Bassussary, with road construction underway until 2026, offering priority lanes and parking for 670 vehicles. Meanwhile, T1's frequency will improve from 15 to 10 minutes starting January 2025, serving Bayonne, Biarritz, and Anglet.
