Tokyo, Japan - Komatsu Ltd., a heavy equipment manufacturer, has entered a strategic partnership with Ouster, Inc., a lidar sensors provider, to advance the capabilities of its autonomous mining equipment. The two companies have signed a multimillion-dollar agreement to integrate Ouster’s 3D digital lidar technology into Komatsu’s mining machines. This collaboration will see the deployment of Ouster’s state-of-the-art sensors, which include zone monitoring features and routine firmware updates, continuously improving the performance of Komatsu's autonomous systems.

Komatsu's autonomous mining solutions are designed with two main goals in mind: improving productivity and reducing the total cost of ownership, all while promoting a zero-harm environment. By replacing the legacy 2D lidar systems with Ouster's advanced 3D lidar technology, the partnership aims to significantly enhance the perception, functionality, and overall safety of Komatsu's autonomous machines.

The new autonomy stack will incorporate Ouster’s REV7 series lidar sensors, offering both long-range and short-range capabilities. This technology will deliver improved detection, navigation, and collision avoidance features, making it a critical upgrade for the next generation of autonomous mining equipment.

This partnership emphasizes Komatsu's dedication to safer, more efficient, and sustainable mining. Ouster's rugged lidar technology, built to endure harsh environments, enhances Komatsu's mining automation capabilities.

Mr. Matt Reiland, Technical Director of Automation Innovation at Komatsu, said, "Ouster's products can withstand the shock, vibration, and temperature constraints while delivering the enhanced range and spatial awareness necessary to operate in harsh mining environments."

As part of the partnership, Komatsu aims to continuously enhance its product offerings, empowering contractors to operate more efficiently, safely, and sustainably while ensuring long-term value and performance improvements.

With this agreement, Komatsu and Ouster are set to revolutionize the mining automation landscape, setting new standards for safety and efficiency in the industry. By integrating advanced lidar technology into Komatsu's autonomous machines, the partnership promises to unlock new capabilities and significantly improve operational performance in the mining sector.
