Elko, Nevada – Komatsu Ltd., a heavy equipment manufacturer, has officially unveiled a monumental addition to its Elko, Nevada, facility - a P&H 2100BL electric rope shovel, now standing as a landmark and symbol of mining innovation and engineering excellence.

Originally manufactured in 1979, the P&H 2100BL has served a vital role in mining operations for more than four decades. The massive machine, which stands as tall as a five-story building and weighs over one million pounds, has been relocated from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Elko, where it now greets visitors from the nearby I-80 highway.

The shovel’s installation pays tribute to the legacy of P&H Mining Equipment and the company’s long-standing history of U.S. manufacturing. It serves as a tangible reminder of Komatsu’s commitment to honoring its past while driving forward with modern mining technologies.

Komatsu’s Elko service center has become a regional hub for mining and construction equipment support. Since its opening in 2019, the company has invested $57 million to build and expand the site in response to customer demand. The facility services haul trucks, hydraulic shovels, electric rope shovels, and other mining equipment. In 2023, Komatsu further strengthened its operations with a 50,000-square-foot warehouse expansion, improving parts availability for the local mining and construction industries.

Mr. Tom Suess, Komatsu’s Vice President and General Manager for U.S. Mining Distribution, said, “The P&H 2100BL electric shovel is a remarkable piece of engineering. Its journey from Milwaukee to Elko marks a significant moment in our company’s history. This machine now stands proudly at our Elko facility as a symbol of the evolution of mining technology, the enduring legacy of P&H Mining Equipment, and Komatsu’s deep connection to the Elko community. We are thrilled to share this iconic shovel and celebrate both its history and its continued inspiration for the future of mining.”
