Labatt Brewing adds 10 Volvo VNR Electric trucks in Quebec, a $5.47M investment backed by $1.625M in incentives. This step supports Labatt’s 2040 net-zero goal.
Date: December 2, 2024Canada, United Kingdom- Labatt Brewing Company Limited., a beverage company has acquired 10 new battery-powered trucks for its logistics operations in Quebec. The purchase is the largest single order of VNR Electric trucks for Volvo Trucks in Canada, representing nearly 25 per cent of their deliveries. Labatt's latest investment is in addition to the recent announcement of the purchase of its first zero-emission mobile service repair truck for the province.
Ms. Sarah Genetti, Senior Director of Procurement and Sustainability at Labatt Breweries of Canada, said, "Integrating electric trucks into our fleet marks a significant milestone for our operations and our goal to deliver beer to our customers in the most efficient way possible. This initiative is one additional step toward our global ambition of achieving net-zero emissions across our business by 2040 and reflects our commitment to adopting innovative solutions that reduce our carbon footprint."
Labatt's $5,470,000 investment in the new electric truck fleet was supported by a $750,000 contribution from the Government of Canada through its Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emissions Vehicles (iMHZEV) program while the Government of Quebec contributed $875,000 as part of the Écocamionnage "Part 1 – Acquisition of technologies" program.
Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, said "Electrifying transportation is a powerful way to tackle climate change. By integrating electric vehicles, companies like Labatt are taking meaningful steps to reduce their ecological footprint—efforts that deserve recognition and encouragement."
Each electric truck cuts emissions equal to six conventional vehicles, with the new fleet reducing emissions equivalent to 60 cars. The Volvo VNR Electric trucks deliver 455hp, 4,051 lb./ft. torque, and tow up to 80,000 lbs GCWR, with a range of 280 km using 300 kWh battery packs.
At Labatt’s Montreal and Bois-des-Filion centres, trucks average 50 km and 110 km daily, supported by ABB Terra charging stations. Delivery teams praise the trucks’ ease of use, quiet operation, and excellent visibility. The transition highlights Labatt’s commitment to sustainability and efficiency.
