France, Europe - Liebherr-Mining Equipment Colmar SAS., a mining equipment manufacturer, has launched the new R 9100 Generation 8 (G8), the latest addition to its 100-tonne mining excavator range. The new model is now available for purchase in both backhoe and face shovel configurations and will replace the previous R 9100 G6 once series production begins in 2026.
The R 9100 G8 has already shown strong results during pre-series field validation in Indonesia. Tested at the Tanjung Enim mine in South Sumatra in partnership with PT Madhani Talatah Nusantara, the excavator achieved an average 92 percent availability between September 2024 and December 2025, while averaging 411 operating hours per month.
A key highlight of the new excavator is its improved fuel performance. Compared with the R 9100 G6, the R 9100 G8 consumes 20 percent less fuel and delivers 30 percent higher fuel efficiency, helping operators save up to 100,000 litres of fuel annually. This is supported by Liebherr Power Efficiency (LPE), the company’s engine and hydraulic management system designed to reduce fuel use without affecting productivity.
The machine retains proven features such as the D9512 engine, standard bucket capacities, and a pressurised FOPS-certified cab. At the same time, it introduces several Generation 8 upgrades, including a redesigned electro-hydraulic control system, an optimised hydraulic circuit, integrated IMUs for cylinder dampening, and a redesigned undercarriage with lifetime-sealed travel drives. Grease change intervals have also been extended to a minimum of 250 operating hours to help reduce downtime.
Like other Generation 8 excavators, the R 9100 G8 is compatible with Liebherr’s IoMine technology suite, which supports safer, smarter, and more efficient mining operations through connected machine data and assistance systems.
Both configurations of the new excavator are available for purchase now. Backhoe series production will begin in Q2 2026, followed by the face shovel configuration in Q3 2026.
