MAN Engines introduces the powerful MAN H4576 hydrogen combustion engine, offering 500 horsepower for sustainable off-road applications.
Date: November 11, 2023Munich,Germany- MAN TRUCK & BUS INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED., MAN Engines provides sustainable drive solutions with the launch of the MAN H4576, a new hydrogen combustion engine designed for agricultural machinery and off-road applications. Boasting 500 horsepower and a 16.8-liter displacement, the MAN H4576 aims to significantly cut carbon emissions in the field and off the road.
Built on the reliable D3876 diesel engine base, the H4576 shares 80% of its components with its diesel counterpart, making it easy for manufacturers to integrate into existing vehicle designs. The key change is an increase in bore size to 145 mm, ensuring the engine achieves the desired power output.
The hydrogen supply system includes low-pressure lines and a rail for precise pressure control, while the hydrogen injector allows for low-pressure direct injection. The engine control unit manages hydrogen and air supply, injection, and ignition, ensuring safe and efficient combustion.
With a focus on emissions reduction, MAN Engines employs an advanced combustion process and an established exhaust gas aftertreatment system to meet EU Stage V and Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) standards. The engine minimizes nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions.
The MAN H4576, developed with existing technology, is set to reach the market swiftly. Kässbohrer Off-Road Vehicles is partnering with MAN Engines to incorporate the hydrogen combustion engine into their PistenBully 800 vehicle, scheduled for unveiling in 2023.
An interesting feature is the dual-fuel capability, allowing the engine to run on conventional diesel or alternative fuels like HVO. This flexibility aligns with the strategy of combining hydrogen with existing fuels for a smoother transition.
The success of this approach is evident in the twelve-cylinder MAN D2862 V-engine, powering the Hydrocat 48 wind farm supply vessel since mid-2022. Looking ahead, MAN Engines is actively developing a stationary hydrogen engine, the MAN H3268, designed for combined heat and power applications in plants.
The MAN H4576 signifies a significant step toward sustainable off-road drives and contributes to global efforts for decarbonization.
