McNeilus receives order from Republic Service

Mcneilus announces first order from Republic Services Inc., for its fully integrated McNeilus Volterra ZSL electric refuse collection vehicle and will initially build 50 vehicles.

Dodge Center, United States- McNeilus Truck and Manufacturing, Inc., an Oshkosh Corporation company, has received the first order from Republic Services Inc., for its fully integrated McNeilus Volterra ZSL electric refuse collection vehicle and will initially build 50 vehicles for them, with delivery starting in June 2024. The deal more than doubles the number of electric refuse collection vehicles from any manufacturer operating in the field today.

The specifically designed electric refuse collecting vehicle (eRCV) will be made in a brand-new, cutting-edge factory in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and the compaction assembly will be made at the McNeilus corporate office in Minnesota.

The McNeilus Volterra ZSL product has been granted zero emission status by the California Air Resources Board (CARB), offering carriers a way to satisfy clean fleet objectives and transition to more environmentally friendly operations. The Advanced Clean Truck laws that are now in force in eight states can be complied with thanks to the CARB certifications as well as the zero-emissions vehicle reporting requirements.

With the first McNeilus order, we are setting the bar for the sector and are on schedule to buy 50% electric trucks by 2028. We are confident that the increased safety and ergonomic features of these electric vehicles will benefit both our drivers and the communities we serve. They will also operate more quietly and with lower emissions.”

The engineering team at McNeilus received invaluable advice from Republic Services regarding the vehicle's functional, safe, and ergonomically sound characteristics. The McNeilus Volterra ZSL is built from the ground up to provide customers with a single OEM electric vehicle solution, including Republic Services. From the compaction components to the battery management system to the on-board telematics and active safety systems, every system and function is created for severe refuse collecting settings and is intended to work together. The Volterra ZSL eRCV differs from all other waste vehicles in that it has a fully integrated custom cab and chassis, as opposed to other refuse vehicles that call for mounting a refuse body to a different chassis.

To bring its most recent garbage vehicle to market, McNeilus drew on its experience in refuse collecting bodies and collaborated with parent company Oshkosh Corporation, which has close to 30 years of experience in electrification. The Volterra ZSL zero emission RCV has a sophisticated drivetrain that combines cutting-edge lithium-ion batteries and a ground-breaking electric-axle technology, as well as 38% greater cabin capacity than the industry standard. It is intended to decrease environmental effect and reduce noise in communities across the country while assisting clients in achieving their sustainability goals. It will complete a full day's worth of garbage collection routes on a single charge.
