Leinfelden-Echterdingen, Germany- Mercedes-Benz trucks, a division of Daimler Truck AG, has delivered three battery-electric eActros 400 trucks to AVG Köln for use as tipper tractor units in municipal waste-management operations.
The second-generation eActros 400 vehicles, equipped with the ProCabin, are the first Mercedes-Benz trucks to feature a factory-integrated mechanical power take-off system. Previously, similar electric-truck applications required additional systems supplied and installed by external bodybuilders.
Erkes Nutzfahrzeuge will complete the final vehicle integration, including the hydraulic systems and steel half-round tipping trailers supplied by Schwarzmüller.
The trucks will operate under the BELLA project, which focuses on battery-electric, emission-free transportation of incinerator bottom ash. This residual material is produced during the thermal treatment of household and commercial waste.
The eActros trucks will replace conventional diesel-powered vehicles and transport bottom ash within the AVG Köln facility and to nearby processing sites. The deployment demonstrates the potential of battery-electric trucks in demanding waste and recycling operations that have traditionally relied on fossil fuels.
To support the electric fleet, AVG Köln is developing a charging hub covering approximately 3,000 square metres. The facility will include nine charging stations for commercial vehicles, powered through a direct connection to the company’s waste-to-energy plant.
Each eActros 400 is equipped with two 207 kWh battery packs, providing a total installed capacity of 414 kWh. The batteries use lithium iron phosphate cell technology, which offers a long operating life and is suited to intensive commercial applications.
Mercedes-Benz Trucks said the delivery demonstrates that battery-electric powertrains can meet the operational requirements of challenging waste-logistics applications. AVG Köln and its project partners aim to use the vehicles and supporting charging infrastructure to advance lower-emission municipal transport and circular-economy operations.
