Manesar, Haryana - Montra Electric., of the Murugappa Group, has become the first company in India to receive PM E-Drive certification for a heavy-duty electric truck. The company delivered the first certified Rhino 5538 EV 6x4 tractor trailer to UltraTech Cement. The handover ceremony was attended by Arun Murugappan, Chairman, Montra Electric; Jalaj Gupta, Managing Director; and Sathia Raj, Chief Procurement Officer, UltraTech Cement.
The certification is expected to accelerate the adoption of electric heavy-duty trucks across logistics, mining, infrastructure, and manufacturing. It allows fleet operators to move away from conventional fuels while maintaining performance and reliability. Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said electric trucks are crucial for India’s Net Zero goals and building a self-reliant EV ecosystem under Atmanirbhar Viksit Bharat.
Arun Murugappan noted that reducing emissions from freight transport is a key challenge in India. He thanked the Government for the PM E-Drive scheme and highlighted Montra Electric’s commitment to delivering advanced, reliable electric trucks to support the clean freight mission.
The Rhino 5538 EV is available in 6x4 and 4x2 variants. It supports high-utilization, fixed-route operations and is suitable for cement logistics, ports, mining, steel plants, and long-haul freight corridors. With heavy-duty trucks contributing significantly to freight emissions, the PM E-Drive-certified Rhino 5538 EV is a step toward cleaner, sustainable freight movement in India.
