Aalsmeer, Netherlands- Royal Burgers B.V., a Dutch manufacturer specializing in custom trailers, enclosed bodywork and Emons Group B.V., a logistics and transport service providerare collaborating to develop a new generation of Double Deck trailers designed to improve transport efficiency, operational flexibility and integration with existing logistics processes.
The new trailer builds on the proven Double Deck concept, combining Royal Burgers’ engineering expertise with Emons Group’s extensive operational experience. The companies aim to increase cargo capacity while making the technology more adaptable to the evolving requirements of European transport operators.
With logistics companies facing rising operating costs, driver shortages and increasing pressure to reduce emissions, maximising cargo carried per journey is becoming increasingly important. Double Deck technology addresses this challenge by allowing more non-stackable palletised goods to be transported in a single trip.
The development follows the principle of “moving more with fewer trips.” Increasing the volume transported per journey can improve fleet utilisation, reduce the number of required trips and lower the transport impact per unit of cargo.
The new-generation trailer has been developed around practical logistics requirements, with Royal Burgers and Emons focusing on warehouse operations, loading docks, QHES requirements and compatibility with existing transport networks.
An adjustable floor enables both deck levels to be loaded efficiently from standard loading docks. This improves compatibility with existing warehouse infrastructure and allows operators to integrate the trailer into established logistics processes more easily.
Mr. Daan Emons, CEO of Emons Group, said, “If you can do it with two instead of three, you’ve already made a significant improvement. If you’ve been in business for more than 80 years and want to stay in business for another 80, you need to look ahead and invest in new developments.”
The Double Deck concept is primarily intended for high-volume full-truckload transport, particularly for non-stackable palletised products measuring approximately 1.4 to 1.8 metres in height.
The new trailer also offers greater flexibility when required. It can be configured with an internal height of 2.50 metres, allowing operators to transport up to 33 full-height units. This can create additional opportunities for return loads and help reduce empty kilometres.
The trailer is also designed for rail and short-sea transport, as well as EcoCombi and Super EcoCombi configurations, expanding its potential applications across different transport networks.
Mr. Jeroen Naalden, CEO of Royal Burgers, said, “We need input from transportation companies. Innovation is a growth accelerator, but new technology needs to be developed to address the challenges operators actually face.”
The next-generation Double Deck trailer will debut at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, where Royal Burgers and Emons Group will showcase its enhanced efficiency and flexibility. The event will take place from September 15–20, 2026, at Hall 27, Booth F38 and Outdoor Area S33.
