RVK began using its first articulated Solaris hydrogen buses, part of an order for 18 advanced vehicles placed last year
Date: September 12, 2024Cologne, Germany- Regionalverkehr Köln GmbH (RVK)., a public transport operator, added eight Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen buses to its existing fleet of 46 Solaris hydrogen buses. RVK's hydrogen fleet is set to expand further with 20 additional buses, nine 12m and eleven 18m models currently on order. Once all deliveries are completed, RVK will operate 84 hydrogen-powered Solaris buses.
The new articulated hydrogen buses delivered to RVK are equipped with a 100 kW fuel cell system and can be refueled with over 50 kilograms of hydrogen stored in eight roof tanks. Their modular drive system removes the traditional engine compartment, increasing passenger capacity.
The latest hydrogen buses feature advanced equipment, including high-efficiency air conditioning with heat pump functionality, an advanced monitoring system, and various driver support features. Benefits of these hydrogen buses include zero emissions, high passenger capacity, long range, and quick refueling—key factors for RVK, which serves routes connecting rural areas to cities.
RVK has been advancing its hydrogen strategy with Solaris as a key partner. Solaris leads in hydrogen technology for public transport, with over 700 Urbino hydrogen buses ordered by 40+ customers across 10 European countries. Nearly 250 of these buses are already in service in 25 cities, with Solaris also offering expert after-sales support and maintenance.
