Stockholm, Sweden - Sandvik AB., a mining equipment company, has introduced the DD423iE, a new battery-electric underground development drill and the second model in its next-generation drill lineup.

The DD423iE follows the diesel-powered DD423i launched in spring 2026 and brings major improvements in battery capacity, drilling performance and tramming speed. Sandvik says the machine offers 50% more battery capacity and tramming range, 80% better battery drilling performance and 30% higher tramming speed, making it the fastest underground drill in Sandvik’s portfolio.

The drill can deliver more than three times the charging power while drilling, allowing the battery to charge from 0% to 100% in about two hours. This helps reduce downtime, as charging can be completed within the time needed for a full drilling round.

The DD423iE also retains key performance gains from the diesel DD423i, including 34.5% greater drilling coverage, 48% improved cross-cut performance and new SB75i booms with double roll-overs. Operator visibility has improved by 55%, while the machine is designed to maintain over 95% availability in demanding underground mining conditions.

The machine uses three lithium iron phosphate batteries and features advanced safety systems for underground operation. Field testing at Agnico Eagle Finland’s Kittilä mine showed strong performance, with operators noting that the DD423iE can compete with six-cylinder diesel machines.

Sandvik says the DD423iE is designed to help mining customers improve productivity, lower operating costs and support sustainability goals through battery-electric operation.
