Chennai- Switch Mobility Ltd., a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland and part of the Hinduja Group, has launched two new electric city buses – the EiV12 for India and the E1 for Europe, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing urban mobility solutions in India, Europe, and the GCC regions.
The Switch EiV12 is a low-floor city bus specifically designed for urban commutes in India. It boasts chassis-mounted batteries with a scalable capacity exceeding 400 kWh, making it India’s first low-floor city bus of its kind. The EiV12 was unveiled by Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon'ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways of India, in the presence of Ashok P. Hinduja, Chairman of the Hinduja Group, alongside other industry leaders.
The Switch E1, developed for the European market, was launched virtually. Both buses share a common design and EV architecture, reflecting the company's global strategy.
Designed and manufactured in India, the Switch EiV12 meets global standards for performance, safety, reliability, and passenger comfort. With seating for up to 39 passengers, it maximizes operational efficiency for fleet operators.
Mr. Ashok P. Hinduja, Chairman of the Hinduja Group, said, “These buses exemplify our commitment to the PM’s Make in India vision – made in India, for India and the world. Switch Mobility continues to innovate with cutting-edge technology and zero carbon emissions, backed by the improvements in India's infrastructure.”
Mr. Dheeraj Hinduja, Chairman of Switch Mobility, said, "The launch of the Switch EiV12 and the E1 for Europe marks a significant milestone for the Hinduja Group and Ashok Leyland, reinforcing our dedication to sustainable mobility. Switch is actively expanding its product range to democratize electric mobility globally.”
Mr. Mahesh Babu, CEO of Switch Mobility, added, “We are excited to introduce the EiV12 and E1, designed for India and Europe respectively, based on our global EV platform. With over 1,800 orders already received for the EiV12, it demonstrates the growing market confidence in our sustainable urban transport vision.”
The Indian electric city bus market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21% by 2030, with EV penetration expected to reach 70%. The fleet of electric city buses is expected to surpass 70,000 units by that year.
The EiV12 sets new standards in passenger comfort, safety, and technology. It features a low-floor entry with a kneeling mechanism for easy access, an automated wheelchair ramp, and dedicated spaces for differently-abled passengers. Equipped with five CCTV cameras for safety, five dedicated women’s seats, and a panoramic glass area for better visibility and interior lighting, the EiV12 enhances passenger experience.
Powered by Switch’s proprietary iON telematics system, the EiV12 offers real-time vehicle health monitoring, integrated fleet management, and a rear-end dual-gun charging interface for quick recharging and efficient depot space utilization. Its IP67-rated battery ensures reliable performance in demanding road conditions.
The Switch E1, designed for Europe, features a lightweight monocoque structure and in-wheel motors, with a flat gangway layout and triple-door configuration. The E1 can accommodate up to 93 passengers, including standees, setting a new benchmark for passenger-centric public transportation in urban transit systems.
