      Tamil Nadu Launches 250 New Buses

      Metropolitan Transport Corporation and Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations launched 250 new buses worth ₹290.08 crore, including 130 low-floor AC electric buses and 120 new state transport buses, to improve public mobility and support cleaner transportation.

      Tamil Nadu- Metropolitan Transport Corporation and the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations have introduced 250 new buses worth ₹290.08 crore for public use. The services were flagged off by Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu Mr. C. Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat on August 25, 2026. 

      As part of the initiative, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation launched 130 new low-floor air-conditioned electric buses procured at a cost of ₹234.50 crore. The buses form the first phase of a larger programme to operate 750 low-floor air-conditioned electric buses worth ₹1,337 crore through seven depots. 

      The initiative is aimed at reducing environmental pollution and strengthening sustainable public transport in Chennai. MTC is already operating 625 low-floor electric buses worth ₹697 crore through five depots. 

      In addition, the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations launched 120 new buses worth ₹55.58 crore as the first phase of a programme to introduce 1,614 new buses at an estimated cost of ₹756 crore across six State Transport Corporations.

      The launch event was attended by Transport Minister Thiru A. Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, Chief Secretary Dr. M. Saikumar, I.A.S., Transport Department Secretary Thiru L. Nirmalraj, I.A.S., MTC Managing Director Thiru T. Mohan, I.A.S., and senior government officials.
