Toyota Introduces All-New Land Cruiser FJ Series in Japan

Toyota City, Japan - Toyota Motor Corporation, an automotive manufacturer, has introduced the new Land Cruiser FJ series in Japan, with sales beginning on May 14, 2026.

The FJ series joins Toyota’s existing Land Cruiser family, which includes the 300, 70, and 250 series. Developed under the concept of “Freedom & Joy,” the new model is designed to make the Land Cruiser experience more accessible to a wider range of customers.

Toyota created the FJ series for drivers with diverse lifestyles, offering the freedom to travel anywhere while enjoying new experiences along the way. The vehicle features a more manageable size, while still preserving the core Land Cruiser strengths of reliability, durability, and off-road capability.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ series is designed as a capable off-roader that gives users confidence and freedom across different terrains. Built on a durable and reliable ladder-frame structure, the model delivers strong off-road capability with excellent wheel articulation to help maintain tire contact on rough surfaces. Its shortened wheelbase further improves mobility and maneuverability, making it suitable for challenging routes. Power comes from a 2.7-liter gasoline engine paired with a 6-speed Super ECT transmission, offering smooth driving, dependable performance, and everyday usability on regular roads while retaining genuine off-road strength.

In terms of design, the FJ series keeps the traditional Land Cruiser square cabin layout, supporting practical interior space and cargo capacity. At the same time, it adds a more playful character through elements such as its distinctive dice-inspired motif. Its compact proportions make it easier for drivers to understand the vehicle’s dimensions, helping improve control in both urban and off-road conditions. Toyota has also designed the FJ series with customization in mind, offering accessories that allow customers to personalize the vehicle according to their needs and lifestyle.

Toyota also plans to introduce the Land Hopper, an electric personal mobility vehicle, from spring 2027 onward. Designed for off-road riding on trails, including unpaved mountain and forest paths, the Land Hopper is intended to extend the mobility experience beyond where a Land Cruiser can travel. Since it can be stored in a vehicle’s luggage area, it supports both everyday use and destination-based touring.

The Land Cruiser has been developed and refined through real-world use by customers across the globe. Known for its reliability, durability, and off-road performance, it has long supported people in reaching remote places and returning safely. With cumulative sales of around 12.4 million units across more than 190 countries and regions, the Land Cruiser remains one of Toyota’s most trusted global models.

With the arrival of the FJ series, Toyota is expanding the Land Cruiser lineup with a new option suited to a broader range of lifestyles and usage needs. Guided by Toyota’s “TO YOU” concept, the Land Cruiser will continue evolving to meet changing social demands while supporting customers worldwide with dependable mobility.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser FJ combines true off-road capability with the agility of a compact SUV. Built on a durable ladder-frame platform, it offers improved rigidity, strong handling stability, and enhanced ride comfort through the use of high-tensile steel and additional body reinforcement.

Its shortened wheelbase improves maneuverability, giving the FJ a minimum turning radius of 5.5 meters while retaining Land Cruiser-level off-road performance. The vehicle offers ground clearance, approach and departure angles comparable to the 250 Series, along with wheel articulation similar to the 70 Series.

Power comes from a naturally aspirated engine producing 120 kW and 246 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed Super ECT transmission. The setup supports smooth acceleration, better low-speed control, downhill stability, and fuel efficiency of 8.7 km/L in WLTC mode.

The FJ uses a high-mount double wishbone front suspension and a 4-link rigid rear suspension for balanced performance on-road and off-road. It also includes off-road support features such as Downhill Assist Control, Hill Start Assist Control, and an electric rear differential lock.

In design, the FJ keeps the Land Cruiser’s square cabin style while adding a playful dice-inspired look. Its compact body, two-row five-seat layout, sliding and reclining second-row seats, and 795-liter luggage capacity make it practical for daily use and outdoor travel. The exterior includes removable corner bumpers, U-shaped lights, roof rails, side steps, skid plate protection, a Toyota logo, and a rear-mounted spare tire.

Inside, the cabin is designed for clear visibility and easy operation, with a horizontal instrument panel, 12.3-inch display audio system, Panoramic View Monitor, Blind Spot Monitor, and Toyota Safety Sense for added safety and confidence.
