Shanghai, China- Vitesco Technologies Group AG., a supplier of modern drive technologies and electrification solutions has opened a new, 2,800 square metre manufacturing space at its Icheon electronics site.
Series manufacturing equipment will be used to build the initial parts of Vitesco Technologies' electric axle drive, the EMR4 (Electronics Motor Reducer). By evaluating series components, the first parts from the new line will verify the resilience of the initial sample items. During this approximately six-month period, Hyundai will also include the new Icheon line parts into pre-series vehicles in order to certify them. By 2024, full series manufacturing at the Icheon plant is expected to start. The new line can produce more than 200,000 EMR4 devices annually.
Mr. Thomas Stierle, Member of the Executive Board and head of the Electrification Solutions division of Vitesco Technologies said that, Being actively involved in Korea's shift to electromobility makes us proud. By expanding the Icheon production area to accommodate the production of EMR4 axle drives, we are carrying out our well-established and prosperous strategy of producing locally for the local market.
The EMR3 and EMR4 electric axle drives from Vitesco Technologies are popular because they provide a desirable blend of small size, light weight, high power density, and superior efficiency. Furthermore, the EMR4 of the latest generation is scalable, making it suitable for offering a single solution for whole vehicle platforms and segments.
Hyundai Motor Group chose Vitesco Technologies’ new EMR4 axle drive in March of 2022. Over its lifetime the contract for EMR4 delivery has a total value of more than €2 billion. The version for Hyundai will be a 400 V system with a nominal power of 160 kW. State-of-the-art silicon carbide (SiC) technology in the inverter together with many detail optimizations are giving the EMR4 an even better efficiency than the already very efficient EMR3 axle drive.
