Pune - Skoda Auto Volkswagen India Private Limited., an automobile company, will introduce the Golf GTI to India by August 2025, using the government’s homologation-free import route, allowing up to 2,500 units per year. This will serve as an aspirational model for Volkswagen India. Although the Golf GTI is making its debut, Volkswagen had previously launched the limited-edition Polo GTI in India in 2016.
The updated Golf GTI, revealed in April 2024, features cosmetic changes, updated infotainment, and a power boost. Its 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine now produces 265hp (up from 245hp) with 370Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Volkswagen claims a 0-100kph time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 250kph. Key mechanical features include progressive steering, an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock, and an optional adaptive suspension.
The latest Golf GTI retains its unmistakable Volkswagen look, with sporty touches like 18-inch 'Richmond' alloy wheels (optional 19-inch), GTI badges, and red accents, including a strip above the VW logo and red brake calipers. It also boasts aggressive front and rear bumpers, large air intakes, twin tailpipes, a diffuser, and a dual-tone roof spoiler.
The Golf GTI features Matrix LED headlights and 3D LED tail-lights with customizable welcome and goodbye signatures. Its 12.9-inch infotainment screen boasts improved graphics, simpler menus, and ChatGPT integration. Inside, the car has classic tartan upholstery, GTI-specific digital instrument graphics, and a red-pulsing push-to-start button.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI is expected to be priced around Rs 40 lakh in India, competing with the Mini Cooper S (priced at Rs 44.90 lakh with a 204hp, 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine). If Skoda introduces the Octavia RS in India, it will also rival the Golf GTI.
