Volvo EX30 Adds V2L and Smarter Charging Features

Gothenburg, Sweden - Volvo Cars, A new software update is expanding the capabilities of the Volvo EX30, allowing the compact electric SUV to supply power to external devices directly from its battery. The update also introduces Plug & Charge functionality in selected European markets, simplifying the public charging experience.

With the new Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) feature, the EX30 can function as a portable power source while parked. Owners can use the vehicle’s stored energy to operate everyday equipment such as coffee machines, power tools, refrigerators or camping appliances. This gives the EX30 greater practical value beyond transportation, particularly during outdoor activities, work projects or temporary power outages.

Volvo Cars is rolling out the over-the-air update to both new and existing EX30 customers. The update is being provided free of charge and will gradually reach eligible vehicles in markets around the world.

Alongside the new energy features, Volvo has also improved the EX30’s digital user experience. A redesigned settings menu reduces complexity, while a customisable contextual bar provides easier access to frequently used functions and predictive controls.

In selected European markets, the update also enables Plug & Charge for eligible EX30 models. At compatible public charging stations, drivers can simply connect the charging cable and the vehicle will automatically authenticate and begin charging, eliminating the need to use separate apps, charging cards or additional verification steps.

“Through the power of software and over-the-air updates, we can continue to enhance our cars with useful new features long after customers have bought them – including capabilities they may not have expected when they first purchased the car,” says Alwin Bakkenes, head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars.

Using the V2L system is straightforward. An adapter is connected to the vehicle’s external charging port, after which electrical devices can be plugged in and powered much like they would be from a conventional household outlet.

The system can supply up to 3 kW of power at 16 amps, making it suitable for a broad range of everyday electrical equipment. To preserve sufficient driving range, the vehicle automatically stops supplying external power once the battery charge falls below 20%.

Expanding the Role of the EV Battery

V2L is part of the broader development of bidirectional charging technology, which enables an electric vehicle to both receive and supply electricity. In the EX30, this capability allows stored battery energy to be used directly by external devices.

The introduction makes the EX30 one of the early premium compact electric vehicles to offer this technology. Volvo has also introduced the capability on the fully electric EX60 SUV and plans to extend similar functionality to additional models.

For existing EX30 owners, the update demonstrates how software-defined vehicles can continue gaining new functionality even after leaving the factory. Through over-the-air updates, Volvo can introduce additional features, refine vehicle controls and improve the overall ownership experience throughout the vehicle’s lifecycle.

Availability

Plug & Charge is currently available only in Europe for EX30 vehicles from model year 2026 onward.

A separately purchased V2L adapter is required to power external devices.

V2L will be introduced across selected CCS2 markets in EMEA, Asia-Pacific and Latin America, although availability may vary depending on market and vehicle configuration.

The V2L function will not be offered on EX30 models in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan or Japan. Customers in these markets will still receive the user-interface improvements included in the software update.
