Volvo Penta Launches BESS for Microgrid Solutions
Volvo Penta's BESS subsystem delivers fast, transportable energy storage for microgrids, meeting growing power demands in construction and mining.
Date: March 4, 2025
Gothenburg, Sweden - AB Volvo Penta., a power solutions provider, unveils its BESS subsystem, featuring transportable and fast-charging solutions that enhance microgrid applications such as quarries, urban restoration sites, and more. With tightening emissions regulations and increasing electricity demands exceeding grid capacity in the construction and mining sectors, the need for energy storage has grown significantly. This innovation aims to address these challenges effectively.
Volvo Penta's energy-dense BESS subsystem meets growing energy demands in heavy-duty sectors with limited grid capacity. It integrates with renewables or other power sources, ensuring reliable energy for large-scale or remote electrification. With a high C-rating, it supports fast charging and enhances grid stability, tackling capacity and frequency challenges.
Volvo Penta's BESS subsystems provide a flexible power solution for zero-emission construction zones and remote mining sites. Designed for easy transport, these subsystems can supply power to on-site equipment and be relocated for recharging without interrupting operations. Additionally, BESS supports stationary equipment like electric excavators, wheel loaders, and crushers, ensuring continuous uptime and seamless functionality.
Built on the same battery packs used in Volvo Group’s on- and off-highway applications, the subsystem is designed for durability, featuring a high IP rating for protection against corrosion and dust—ideal for demanding construction and mining environments.
Equipped with a DC/DC converter for auxiliary power, a telematics gateway for real-time monitoring, and a thermal management system, it ensures optimal performance in diverse conditions. CAN and DC interfaces, adapted from Volvo Group technology, enable reliable data transfer, while a robust Battery Management System enhances performance, extends battery life, and strengthens cybersecurity.
Each Volvo Penta subsystem manages the DC energy supply, while OEMs oversee the AC setup, container integration, and system configuration. This partnership enables customized solutions tailored to the specific requirements of each job site.
