Volvo Autonomous Solutions and DHL Supply Chain launch autonomous operations in the U.S., transforming freight transportation.
Date: December 11, 2024
Texas, United States - Volvo Autonomous Solutions (V.A.S.)., a part of the Volvo Group, and DHL Supply Chain., a division of Deutsche Post DHL, have launched autonomous operations in the United States, marking a key milestone in transforming freight transportation.
The operations will utilize the purpose-built, production-ready Volvo VNL Autonomous, powered by the Aurora Driver. This launch is a critical step in validating the ecosystem needed for large-scale autonomous transport. Initially, a safety driver will monitor performance and ensure smooth integration into existing logistics networks. Freight will be hauled on two routes: Dallas to Houston and Fort Worth to El Paso.
Mr. Sasko Cuklev, Head of On-Road Solutions at Volvo Autonomous Solutions, said, “Early adopters play a pivotal role in accelerating the deployment and acceptance of autonomous technology, enabling us to validate both safety and operational performance. Our collaboration with DHL Supply Chain exemplifies the potential of autonomy as a complementary mode of transport that increases freight capacity and optimizes supply chain efficiencies.”
Mr. Jim Monkmeyer, President of Transportation for DHL Supply Chain, said, “Autonomy is a key enabler in advancing the digital transformation across the logistics sector by providing reliable long-haul capacity. Volvo’s legacy of safety and relentless pursuit of innovation make them an ideal partner in our journey to elevate trucking efficiency and deliver greater value to our customers.”
The Volvo VNL Autonomous is built with critical system redundancy, ensuring safe operations in the rare event of system issues. Volvo’s partnership with Aurora enhances safety, with the Aurora Driver utilizing advanced sensors like high-resolution cameras, radar, and lidar for safe autonomous driving at highway speeds.
Mr. Nils Jaeger, President of Volvo Autonomous Solutions, said, "As part of the Volvo Group, we have access to industry leading product development, world-class manufacturing and a mature dealer and service network. For a large-scale deployment of autonomy, in addition to the autonomous truck, there also needs to be a cohesive and seamless support network of surrounding infrastructure, which creates a comprehensive autonomous ecosystem that enables daily operations.”
