Southfield, Michigan,USA- Eaton Corporation.,  an intelligent power management company, provided its unique ELocker differential system for use in a new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV. Unlike traditional plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that utilize both electric motors and internal combustion engines to drive all wheels, the new model pulls an electric motor for the rear wheels and offers the choice of either an electric motor or an optional internal combustion engine (ICE) to drive the front wheels.

Mr.Mark Kramer, business unit director, ePowertrain, Eaton’s Mobility Group, said, the ELocker had to be designed to be compatible with fluid in an electric drive, which is lighter and has a lower viscosity than axle and transmission oils. To meet this challenge, Eaton engineers made adjustments to traditional ELocker designs by utilizing premium designs, materials, and coatings.

The Eaton ELocker differential offers drivers precise control and traction whenever needed. Its net forged gears ensure durability for off-road driving, while electronic controls enhance reliability. By simply pressing a dash switch, the differential distributes torque equally to both wheels, providing maximum traction on challenging terrain.
