Munich, Germany- MAN Truck & Bus SE., an automotive manufacturer and a subsidiary of Traton, has re-entered the top tier of heavy-duty transport with the launch of its new TGX 41.640 8x4/4 heavy-duty tractor unit, engineered for a gross combination weight of up to 250 tonnes. Designed for some of the most demanding transport assignments, the new model is built to move oversized and ultra-heavy cargo such as wind turbine components, high-voltage transformers, and even submarines.

Powered by a 640 hp MAN D3876 inline six-cylinder engine delivering 3,000 Nm of torque, the new TGX is tailored for extreme loads at low speeds. Its broad torque band, available from 900 to 1,380 rpm, ensures strong and controlled performance in challenging applications.

To handle these exceptional transport tasks, MAN equips the vehicle with a torque converter clutch, a special heavy-duty gearbox, and advanced hydraulic and compressed air systems. These systems allow precise steering and leveling of heavy-duty trailers with 30 or more axles, ensuring stable and accurate maneuvering in all driving conditions.

The new heavy-duty range is delivered as a complete factory solution through MAN Individual. The four-axle base vehicle is first produced at MAN’s Munich plant, before being further adapted at the MAN Truck Modification Center in Wittlich. There, it receives heavy-duty couplings, reinforced cooling systems, and enlarged diesel and hydraulic tanks, turning it into a purpose-built solution for specialized transport operators.

MAN says the new TGX combines the benefits of a highly specialized heavy-haul truck with the support structure of a series-production model. Customers receive the same broad after-sales support, warranty coverage, and financing services available across the MAN portfolio. This strengthens MAN’s position as one of the few manufacturers capable of offering factory-backed transport solutions spanning 3.5 tonnes to 250 tonnes, with models ranging from the TGE and TGL to the TGM, TGS, and TGX. The company also offers electric solutions for selected transport applications from 12 to 42 tonnes.

Mr. Friedrich Baumann, Executive Board Member for Sales & Customer Solutions at MAN Truck & Bus, said the launch marks a strong return to the highest segment of heavy transport. He highlighted that MAN Individual’s expertise has enabled the company to deliver a highly specialized vehicle that combines performance, reliability, and operating efficiency in one package.

MAN has already delivered the first new 250-tonne TGX to German rental specialist BFS. Finished in dark blue, the vehicle will be made available to heavy-duty transport companies needing short-notice access to high-capacity equipment for specialized jobs. BFS Managing Director Jan Plieninger described the truck as a flagship addition to the company’s rental fleet and another milestone in its long-standing partnership with MAN.

At the core of the truck’s driveline is the automated MAN TipMatic 12.30 OD gearbox, paired with the torque converter clutch for low-wear starts and fine control under extreme load. The system can deliver up to 1.59 times more torque, while the Retarder 40 provides high continuous braking performance and thermal stability. MAN has also integrated dedicated TipMatic operating programs, including a Heavy Transport mode for loads up to 250 tonnes and an Efficiency mode for loads up to 70 tonnes to improve fuel economy in lighter-duty applications.

A key element of the vehicle is the heavy-duty tower positioned behind the cab, which centralizes major transport components. This module includes four pressure tanks with 160 litres of additional air supply, a 960-litre diesel tank, and a 290-litre tank for the two-stage heavy-duty hydraulic system. The hydraulic system can generate pressures of up to 300 bar and deliver 20 or 40 litres of oil per minute, depending on axle steering requirements. An integrated heavy-duty transport cooler also helps maintain engine temperature stability during slow-speed, high-load operations.

For trailer coupling, the truck uses a JOST JSK 38 C fifth wheel (3.5-inch) mounted on the frame, combined with a standard 800 mm shifting device for optimized load distribution. The vehicle is also equipped with a front register coupling with three height levels for push and pull operations. At the rear, operators can specify the ROCKINGER 56 EA coupling, which features automatic locking for reliable connection even on uneven ground.

In addition to its heavy-duty engineering, the TGX can also be equipped with MAN’s Individual Lion S package, adding premium styling and comfort features. This package includes carbon-look trim, black aerodomes, red accents, Alcantara seat upholstery, decorative stitching, and red seat belts. Optional features such as a 24-inch television, electrically adjustable TV recliner, and ambient lighting further enhance comfort for long-haul or extended-duty operations.

MAN supports the new 250-tonne TGX with a full range of service and financing solutions. These include MAN Service Contracts, Extended Warranty, Uptime Guarantee, and digital services such as Perform, Compliant M, Timed, and ServiceCare. The company’s service footprint includes around 1,670 locations across more than 140 countries, ensuring widespread support. Additional financing and insurance solutions from MAN Financial Services, including Hire Purchase and PremiumCover, are also available to help customers manage the high-value investment associated with heavy-duty transport equipment.
