Södertälje, Sweden- Scania AB., has expanded its e-mobility offering with the launch of a new 6x2*4 variant on its battery-electric bus platform, introduced in 2023. This low-entry variant is designed to meet the demands of medium and heavy-duty operations, offering increased passenger capacity compared to the existing 4x2 LE BEV. It is well-suited for city, suburban, and shorter intercity routes, providing bus operators with a flexible solution for electrifying transport beyond purely urban applications.

The new variant features a number of advancements, including a newly developed rear axle, the recently launched e-machine, and a charging interface, which are also available for the existing two-axle option. These enhancements combine to offer a competitive, efficient, and highly reliable solution for electric bus fleets.

Built to perform under tough conditions, the new electric chassis is designed for durability and longevity. Its flexibility allows for adaptations to fit the specific needs of both bodybuilders and operators. The new axle gears, with faster gear ratios, reduce internal losses and improve energy efficiency, while the steered tag axle behind the half shaft helps distribute weight more evenly, reducing tyre wear and tear.

For customers, the new 6x2*4 LE BEV variant offers several key benefits, including a robust chassis that increases vehicle durability and extends service life. Its flexible design improves overall operational efficiency, while the enhanced sub-frame reduces noise and enhances driveability, ensuring a more comfortable experience for both passengers and drivers. Additionally, the strategic placement of components simplifies maintenance, reducing costs and increasing the bus's operational availability.

Mr. Carl-Johan Lööf, Head of Product Management for People Transport Solutions at Scania, said “With a completely new e-machine, this three-axle electric variant is reliable, energy-efficient and powerful, thus providing excellent uptime, range, acceleration and startability, not least on steep slopes. And with the new rear position high-speed charging option and several more power nodes to choose from, it offers flexibility that translates to buses that fit local requirements. As the momentum towards electrification keeps increasing, buses built on this platform will be competitive all around the world and can be utilised to expand electric operations to new types of applications.”
