China- Toyota Motor Corporation., has officially launched the bZ5, its third all-electric vehicle under the beyond Zero (bZ) sub-brand, in the Chinese market. Developed by FAW Toyota and manufactured by the GAC Toyota joint venture, the bZ5 signals Toyota’s continued push into the EV sector and a strengthened partnership with BYD, whose battery technology plays a central role in the new model.

The bZ5 is competitively priced, ranging from 129,800 to 159,800 yuan (approximately €15,800 to €19,500). This positions it well against rivals such as the Tesla Model Y, Leapmotor C10, and Deepal S07, making it an attractive option for value-conscious EV buyers in China’s rapidly growing electric SUV market.

Based on Toyota’s e-TNGA platform, the bZ5 is available in four variants: 550 Joy, 550 Pro, 550 Pro Smart Edition, and 630 Pro. All versions feature front-wheel drive and are powered by a 200 kW permanent magnet synchronous motor delivering 330 Nm of torque, sourced from Fudi Power, a BYD subsidiary. Two LFP Blade Battery options are available: a 65.28 kWh pack offering up to 550 km (CLTC) and a 73.984 kWh pack delivering up to 630 km. Fast charging capability up to 90 kW enables a 30% to 80% recharge in just 27 minutes.

Inspired by the Toyota Crossover EV Concept, the bZ5 features a distinctive ‘hammerhead shark’ front-end design, C-shaped headlamps, full-width LED lighting, and a sloped coupe-style roofline. At 4,780 mm in length, with a 2,880 mm wheelbase and a 1,510 mm height, it is longer and lower than the bZ4X, offering enhanced aerodynamics and interior space. Design elements like hidden door handles and 21-inch alloy wheels add a modern and sporty touch.

Inside, the bZ5 features a clean, tech-centric layout highlighted by a 15.6-inch floating touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster. Comfort and convenience features include a rotary gear selector, 256-colour ambient lighting, and a JBL 10-speaker audio system. Toyota also offers a unique ‘Nap Mode’ with fully reclinable front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and acoustic glass, delivering a serene cabin experience.

The bZ5 debuts Toyota Pilot, an advanced driver assistance system developed using Momenta 5.0 software. Depending on the variant, the system includes up to 33 sensors, including LiDAR, and is powered by a 544 TOPS processing chip. Toyota Pilot enables urban Navigation on Autopilot (NOA) and supports over 30 semi-autonomous driving functions, placing the bZ5 among the more tech-advanced EVs in its class.
