Friedrichshafen, Germany- ZF has expanded its presence in Japan’s commercial vehicle market with its latest-generation TraXon 2 automated manual transmission (AMT) now available on the new HINO S’elega premium coach. The vehicle also incorporates ZF’s Intarder, braking, suspension and driver-assistance technologies.
Introduced in 2026, the latest HINO S’elega marks the first application of ZF’s TraXon 2 Coach solution in a HINO vehicle and expands the companies’ existing collaboration from trucks into the premium coach segment.
The 12-speed TraXon 2 AMT features ZF-developed electronic controls and shift actuators designed to provide smoother gear changes, efficient operation and improved driving comfort. According to ZF, the system can reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by up to 1.7% compared with the previous TraXon generation, depending on operating conditions.
For coach applications, the transmission is paired with ZF’s integrated Intarder, which provides wear-free auxiliary braking and can reduce reliance on service brakes by up to 90%. This can contribute to longer maintenance intervals, lower operating costs and reduced brake dust emissions.
Beyond the driveline, the S’elega features several ZF chassis technologies, including Electronic Braking System (EBS), Continuous Damping Control (CDC), Electronic Shock Absorber Control (ESAC) and OptiRide Electronically Controlled Air Suspension (ECAS).
ZF also supplies short-range radar sensors supporting safety functions such as blind-spot monitoring and front cross-traffic alerts.
The expanded partnership strengthens ZF’s position as a technology supplier to Japan’s commercial vehicle industry. Through J-Bus, the joint venture between HINO and ISUZU, the ZF technologies featured on the new S’elega are also being applied to the ISUZU Gala premium coach.
