GPS not mandatory for public transport vehicles until April 2019
This regulation is expected to improve safety for passengers using passenger transport vehicles including taxis and buses.
India - Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), based in New Delhi has decided to postpone the mandatory requirement to have global positioning system (GPS) equipment and panic button connected to all public transport service vehicles till April 1, 2019.
The original decision that was based on the court directives related to safety of passengers, planned to implement by 2017, subsequently extended to April 1, 2019.
This regulation is expected to improve safety for passengers using passenger transport vehicles including taxis and buses. The state government is to ensure that the safety system is installed in all public transport vehicles from April affecting new and used vehicles. As per the government notification, the devices may be fitted by the manufacturer, dealer or the operator themselves under Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, code AIS 140.
