JSW Cement begins with EV Trucks for Logistic operations

Mumbai- JSW Cement Limited., a cement company and part of US$ 23 billion JSW Group, has started testing electric trucks as part of cut the carbon footprint of logistical operations. The company intends to accomplish this by switching to EV trucks from vehicles that run on fossil fuels. One of the few cement manufacturers to start EV experiments in logistics is JSW Cement. 5 electric trucks have been integrated into the pilot project's manufacturing activities route in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.

Currently, JSW Cement emits 173 kg of carbon dioxide per tonne, which is less than 30% of the average global emission rate of 590 kg per tonne for the cement industry. The Sustainalytics ESG risk assessment for the construction material industry, which includes more than 140 companies, places JSW Cement at the top of the list internationally. It is anticipated that this pilot project will prevent more than 150 tonnes of carbon emissions, which is the same amount of CO2 that 6,000 trees would absorb per year.

In India, JSW Cement currently has an annual capacity of 19 million tonnes. With a medium-term goal of reaching 60 million tonnes of capacity in the following five years, it intends to add 2 million tonnes during this calendar year (2023). The Company is anticipated to spend a large amount of invstments on various interventions to lower its carbon emissions throughout this time.

Mr. Nilesh Narwekar, Chief Executive Officer of JSW Cement, said that, Across the Group, sustainability is at the heart of our business activities. JSW Cement is already leading the industry with its decarbonization programs and has the lowest emission intensity. To accomplish our ESG Goals, we are engaged in numerous activities. The present EV Trucks pilot project between our production facilities in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka is a significant step toward a more greener and more useful future. We will scale-up the integration of these EV trucks throughout all of our cement operations in India based on the results of these pilot trials.

The current EV trucks were purchased by JSW Cement from Murugappa Group. The company plans to switch to EV vehicles to support its in-bound and out-bound logistical activities across all the production units after the pilot project is successfully completed.
