Magna reveals next-Gen eDrive at CES 2024

Aurora, Canada–Magna International Inc., with the debut of its next-generation 800V eDrive solution, which breaks new ground in terms of efficiency, power-to-weight ratio, and torque density, Magna is off to an exciting start.

With the integration of multiple cutting-edge technologies, Magna's next generation eDrive is a drop-in solution that offers notable weight and size reductions, improved performance, increased driving range, and sustainability. Because of its lightweight (75 kg) construction and 20% shorter height than Magna's previous generation eDrive, it provides increased versatility.

The ability to rotate the eDrive 90 degrees around the drive axis provides for enhanced system integration in the front and back vehicle space, and it is a supplier industry first breakthrough. This is a critical technology. Additionally, the system reaches up to 93% efficiency in real-world driving (WLTC and highway), which greatly increases efficiency over a broad range of vehicle speeds and increases its versatility.

Mr. Diba Ilunga, President of Powertrain at Magna, said that, We are unwavering in our resolve to provide outstanding driving experiences while promoting a sustainable future. This commitment is fully embodied in our next generation eDrive, which features unmatched sustainability in both its product design and manufacturing process. We have effectively decreased our dependency on aluminium and heavy rare earth resources through the seamless integration of our systems, which has led to a notable 20% decrease in CO2 emissions during manufacture when compared to prior generation eDrives. This outstanding accomplishment is a concrete example of our commitment to sustainable innovation as we move forward with the creation of a more promising and environmentally friendly future.

Magna's next generation eDrive, which offers clients options, can be used in vehicles in the C, D, and E classes as a primary drive solution or as a supplementary secondary drive solution with an optional eDecoupling unit. It produces 250 kW of peak power and 5,000 Nm of peak axle torque.
