20 units of Nikola Tre fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to improve sustainability for West Coast freight, supporting California's emissions regulations.
Date: October 1, 2024Arkansas, United States- J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc., a supply chain solutions providers in North America, announced that it has added 20 units of Nikola Tre fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to expand sustainability solutions for customers with freight needs along the West Coast.
Mr. Greer Woodruff, executive vice president of safety, sustainability and maintenance at J.B. Hunt, said, “Our expertise, resources and relationships uniquely position us to help our customers pursue and realize their sustainability goals. Zero-emission vehicles such as these will help along the path to generate viable, sustainable options that help customers advance their efforts to reduce carbon emissions in their supply chain while also helping J.B. Hunt progress on its sustainability journey.”
J.B. Hunt is set to enhance its intermodal operations in California with several new hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), primarily for port and drayage transport. This initiative aims to address shippers' concerns about California's carbon emissions regulations from the California Air Resource Board (CARB) and the South Coast AQMD’s WAIRE program. By partnering with J.B. Hunt for zero-emission vehicle pickups and deliveries, customers can eliminate WAIRE fees and reduce their carbon footprint.
The Nikola FCEVs will join J.B. Hunt’s fleet of over 200 alternative-powered vehicles, which includes battery-electric, hydrogen-electric, and renewable natural gas (RNG) options, supported by Nikola's HYLA brand for fueling and infrastructure. In 2023, J.B. Hunt purchased three Nikola FCEVs to support dedicated operations.
With a strong focus on incorporating alternative-powered vehicles, J.B. Hunt's experienced teams are actively testing and exploring these technologies. Recently, they launched a pilot program with Clean Energy featuring the new Cummins X15N RNG engine and assisted customers like Daimler Truck North America and Electrolux in integrating alternative-powered vehicles into their operations.
