Gothenburg, Sweden - Volvo Trucks has introduced two all-new 13-litre engines, marking the company’s most fuel-efficient combustion engines to date. The new diesel and gas engine versions are based on Volvo’s latest in-house developed global engine platform and are designed to support renewable fuels, including future hydrogen applications.
The new engine platform is part of Volvo Trucks’ broader driveline strategy, where combustion engines continue to play an important role alongside battery-electric and fuel cell electric technologies. The engines are designed to deliver more power, improved fuel efficiency, lower emissions, reduced noise, and better drivability.
According to Volvo Trucks, the new engines can reduce fuel consumption by up to 4% compared with the engines they replace when combined with Volvo’s latest fuel-saving technologies. This follows the launch of the Volvo Aero range in early 2024, which also improved fuel efficiency by up to 5% compared with previous models.
Mr. Jan Hjelmgren, Head of Product Management at Volvo Trucks, said the new engines represent an important step for the future of combustion technology. He highlighted that their compatibility with existing diesel and gas fuels, as well as renewable fuels and future hydrogen applications, allows Volvo to offer efficient transport solutions with the potential for net-zero emissions.
The new platform includes several technology upgrades, such as improved engine brake functionality, new cylinder and turbo designs, and an updated version of Volvo’s I-Shift transmission. Both diesel and gas versions will also offer higher torque levels, improving performance across different transport applications.
Many variants of the new diesel engine will be compatible with Volvo Trucks’ I-Roll system with engine stop/start functionality. This allows the engine to switch off while rolling downhill, helping operators reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The new platform is ready for renewable and alternative fuels such as biodiesel/B100, HVO, biogas/bio-LNG, and green hydrogen. The D13 diesel engine will offer power outputs from 380 hp to 560 hp and torque from 1,800 Nm to 2,900 Nm. The G13 gas version will deliver 420 hp to 500 hp and torque from 2,400 Nm to 2,800 Nm.
The new Euro 6 engines also meet the latest NNR3 noise regulation requirements and are designed to support future legislation. They will be offered in Volvo FM, FMX, FH, and FH Aero models.
Sales of the new engines are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026. The launch will take place step by step globally, starting with Europe, Morocco, Turkey, and India, followed later by North America, Asia, and South Africa.
The new engines will initially be produced in Skövde, Sweden, while the trucks will be assembled in Tuve, Sweden, and Ghent, Belgium.
