Tata Motors Unveils Hydrogen Tech Facilities

Mumbai- Tata Motors Ltd., an Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer, has recently unveiled two  research and development  (R&D) facilities as part of its commitment to providing sustainable mobility solutions. These facilities include an engine test cell for the development of a Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine and the necessary infrastructure for storing and dispensing Hydrogen fuel for Fuel Cell and H2ICE vehicles.

This marks another significant stride toward Tata Motors' goal of achieving carbon neutrality while harnessing the potential of Hydrogen as a clean energy source.

Particularly for commercial vehicles, we think hydrogen will be the fuel of the future. With the launch of this specialised research and development centre for the development of indigenous hydrogen propulsion technology, a new chapter in the history of technological advancements and green mobility is beginning. Our customers' and our country's future will benefit from the advantages that will come with an entirely new class of powertrains and engines.

Mr. Rajendra Petkar, President and CTO of Tata Motors, said that, We are creating a hydrogen-based internal combustion engine development facility and the related infrastructure for fuel storage and dispensing at our Engineering Research Centre, so this is a big moment for us. This development demonstrates Tata Motors' unwavering leadership in the pursuit of net zero and its long-term goal of providing distinct powertrain solutions for all market segments under one roof. We have been making investments in hydrogen technology for a number of years, and we are still dedicated to using research and product development to fully realise its potential.

Tata Motors has been steadily progressing on its journey to net-zero emissions. At the 2023 Auto Expo, the company showcased a wide range of commercial vehicle concepts, including the flagship Prima tractor. This heavy commercial vehicle comes in two versions, one with a Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine and the other with Fuel Cell Technology. Additionally, they presented the next-generation Hydrogen Fuel Cell bus. Tata Motors has a history of pioneering zero-emission technologies and, on September 25, 2023, delivered two advanced Hydrogen Fuel Cell-powered buses to the Indian Oil Corporation, marking a significant milestone.
