Hindustan Zinc, in collaboration with Inland EV Green Services, launches 55-ton Electric Vehicle Trucks, a pivotal step towards sustainable mining and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Udaipur - Hindustan Zinc., a Vedanta Group company, has officially initiated the deployment of Electric Vehicle (EV) Trucks in partnership with Inland EV Green Services Pvt Ltd., The launch ceremony, held at Rampura Agucha, was attended by Priya Agarwal Hebbar, Chairperson, Hindustan Zinc.

These EV trucks, designed for Indian conditions, feature an impressive 55-ton capacity and a remarkable charging capability, going from 20% to 100% in just 90 minutes. Supplied by IPL Tech Electric Pvt Ltd., a Murugappa Group EV venture, these reliable EV trucks have demonstrated successful operations on Indian roads for over two years.

Expressing pride in the company's efforts, Priya Agarwal Hebbar highlighted Hindustan Zinc's commitment to decarbonizing the mining industry. She stated, "This initiative aligns with Hindustan Zinc's approved SBTi targets and will contribute to the reduction in Scope 3 emissions. The deployment of these electric vehicles will propel us further towards achieving our carbon neutrality goals and set a benchmark for responsible mining practices globally."

The deployment of these EV trucks marks a crucial step in Hindustan Zinc's sustainability journey, aiming for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The partnership with Inland EV Green Services supports their Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approved goals, targeting a 50% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and an additional 25% reduction in absolute Scope 3 GHG emissions by FY2030.

Praveen Somani, Managing Director of Inland EV Green Services, said the significance of the partnership, stating, "This move towards sustainable mining signals a major step towards carbon neutrality, setting a global standard for environmentally responsible mining. This partnership reflects our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and promoting greener initiatives in the industry."

Hindustan Zinc's sustainability efforts include the earlier deployment of LNG-powered vehicles, with plans to establish a fleet of 180 such vehicles. With the addition of EV Trucks, the company is making progress towards achieving net-zero emissions across the value chain by FY2050, in line with the 1.5°C trajectory. The company's commitment to sustainable practices has been globally recognized, ranking 3rd globally and 1st in the Asia Pacific Region in the S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment 2022 under the metal & mining sector.
