Jamna Auto agrees licensing terms to bring Tinsley Bridge steel spring to India

New Delhi / UK- Jamna Auto Industries Ltd1 of New Delhi, an automotive suspension maker for commercial vehicles, has entered into an agreement with Tinsley Bridge Ltd2 (TBL) of Sheffield, UK for exclusive transfer of TBL's Extralite Spring and special steel technologies3 to India. Jamna Auto also announced plans to increase capital expenditure (Capex) to USD80m during the next three to four years to double its existing parabolic spring capacities, enhance its capacities for lift axles and air suspensions, and to add two new products – stabilizer bars and U-bolts to its portfolio.

TBL’s Extralite Spring and special steel technologies are to provide access to lighter and stronger springs that are expected to bring down the weight of the vehicle, thereby increasing the load carrying capacity of the vehicle and potential fuel savings.

The technology is well proven in both heavy commercial vehicle and specialist defence applications, having already passed tests in numerous vehicle validation programmes and through high volume supply to global vehicle manufacturers. Extralite offers increased performance at a competitive cost and with the flexible lead times required by automotive industry standards.

Pradeep Singh Jauhar, managing director, Jamna Auto Industries Ltd, said: “Technology is going to be the key differentiator and will allow us to maintain our leadership position in the market. These state-of-the-art technology products would bring in significant improvement in our customer's products.”

1 Jamna Auto Industries Limited (JAI) was founded in 1954 and is headquartered in Delhi, India. It is the largest automotive suspension spring manufacturer in India and amongst top three in the world. It produces various types of springs including tapered or multi-leaf, parabolic springs, lift-axle suspensions and air suspension system. Jamna has nine manufacturing plants across India located near major CV hubs and has announced the setting up of two new plants in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and Adityapur (near Jamshedpur). The company claims to be the market leader with 64 percent market share in the India OEM segment and produces over 410 modes of springs for OEMs.

2Tinsley Bridge Limited was founded in 1984 and is headquartered in Sheffield, United Kingdom. They design and manufacture vehicle suspension components and machine knives. It offers vehicle suspension components, such as torsion, anti-roll, and stabilizer bars for automotive, rail, and defense vehicle manufacturers; and slideways, guillotine shear blades, scrap shear blades, demolition blades, and general machine knives. The company also provides solutions for the rail industry, including fire resistant coatings and barrier systems, anti-roll bar suspension systems, torsion bar suspension components, brake hoses, pipework systems, interior panels, windscreen wiper systems, signal antennae and aerials, brake system assemblies, trackside steel work, and trackwork switch components; and a range of infrastructure items, including bridges, gantries, and train wash systems.

3Extralite technology incorporates a unique high strength raw material and special manufacturing processing. It has a proven capability and can be heat-treated to higher strength levels without the reduction in ductility associated with conventional spring steels. Extralite can achieve increased load and elevated yield capabilities for use in high stress designs of torsion bars, stabiliser bars and anti-roll bars. Alternatively, the use of Extralite extends the durability of an existing design by up to 100 percent.
