Komárom, Hungary- BYD Auto Co., Ltd, an electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, is strengthening its presence in Hungary with a major new investment aimed at expanding production capabilities to include electric trucks. The EUR 75.7 million project will significantly enhance the company’s existing electric bus plant in Komárom, located about 90 kilometers from Budapest.

As part of this expansion, a 29,000-square-meter facility will be added to the Komárom site, along with a dedicated R&D testing laboratory. Supported by the Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency (HIPA), the new development will enable BYD to manufacture electric trucks alongside buses and is expected to create 620 new jobs in the region.

BYD’s Komárom plant, inaugurated in 2017, reached a key milestone in June with the production of its 1,000th electric bus—many of which are now operating across Hungary. With this latest investment, the plant’s production capacity will triple, enabling it to build up to 1,250 electric buses and trucks annually. The workforce is also set to more than double from the current 500 employees.

This expansion underscores BYD’s long-term commitment to Hungary, reinforcing the country's role as a strategic manufacturing and innovation hub for the company in Europe. The Komárom facility was BYD’s first electric bus plant in Europe, while construction of the company’s first European electric passenger car plant is underway in Szeged.

In addition to its manufacturing footprint, BYD is also investing in Hungary’s innovation landscape by establishing its European business headquarters and R&D center in Budapest. This hub will be central to BYD’s operations across the continent, overseeing sales, model design tailored to European needs, and advanced technology development, particularly in driver assistance systems and powertrains. The headquarters and R&D base are expected to create approximately 2,000 high value-added jobs.

With this comprehensive expansion, BYD is cementing Hungary’s role at the heart of its European strategy, contributing significantly to the region’s shift towards sustainable and smart mobility.
