New Delhi- Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH), based in New Delhi has updated additions in the vehicle Number plates in line with Central Motor Vehicle Act, 1989 ( Amendment) to accommodate Electric vehicles, distinguish vehicles which are sold and due for registrations moving in temporary permits (Temporary registered), vehicles with dealers in stock which are on trade certificates.

Temporary registered vehicles will now have alphabets and numerals in red with a yellow background, while vehicles with dealers with trade plates will have white letters on a red background. Battery operated vehicles will continue to sport the yellow on green background format.

Further, the rules also prohibit display of any character other than those in English capital letters and Roman numerals on the number plates. Additionally, the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) specifies not only the size of the number plate, but also the thickness and spacing of the characters.
