      Chennai– Switch Mobility Automotive Ltd (SMAL), Chennai, a wholly owned subsidiary of Ashok Leyland Ltd has launched planned to invest USD 125mn in an electric vehicle plant. It’s a part of USD366mn investment planned for UK and India.

      The plant is expected to set up a plant at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The plant will reportedly have a capacity of manufacturing 30,000 units of electric light commercial vehicles (e-LCVs) and 10,000 units of electric buses. The EV plant will have an LCV and bus and battery pack assembly under one roof.

      Currently switch manufacturing electric buses in a dedicated portion of Ashok Leyland’s Ennore plant in Tamil Nadu. For electric LCVs, Switch Mobility will tap some space in Ashok Leyland’s Hosur plant.

                  In Nov 2021, Ashok Leyland has transferred the EV business to SMAL for lumpsum of USD 31mn.
