Date: February 15, 2025
Texas, U.S - Caterpillar Inc., a construction and mining equipment manufacturer, has launched the FM528 GF/LL, a versatile forestry excavator dubbed “the lumberjack of all trades.” Designed for multiple applications, it offers configurations for processor, roadbuilder, log loader, and knuckleboom loader controls. This adaptable machine seamlessly transitions from forest operations to mill yard tasks.
The FM528 GF/LL features a 173-hp Cat C4.4 engine, an electrohydraulic system, a side-entry Next Generation Certified Forestry cab, and a choice of fixed or live heel blade.
The new side-entry Forestry ROPS cab enhances safety and visibility with a wide door, tilt-up armrest, thick polycarbonate windshield, narrow cab pillars, panoramic windows, and a flat engine hood. It also features easy-to-reach controls, dual HVAC, a heated and cooled air-suspension seat, rearview camera, in-cab storage, Bluetooth, and USB ports.
The excavator is compatible with Cat forestry grapples ranging from 52 to 60 inches. These grapples are versatile, suitable for land clearing, fire cleanup, chipping, grinder loading, mulching, and processing tasks. Triple Grouser track shoes enhance maneuverability and reduce ground disturbance in soft or wet conditions. An optional narrow, high, and long undercarriage improves transport and movement between worksites in the woods.
The FM528 is the first Cat forestry machine to offer a fixed or live heel and blade configuration, enabling operators to safely switch between tasks such as navigating steep terrain, handling heavy logs, and performing sorting operations. The engine, combined with an advanced electrohydraulic system, delivers high torque at low rpms while reducing fuel consumption. Cooling E-Fans with reversing capabilities clear debris, enhance engine efficiency, and maintain optimal temperatures.
