United States — Nikola Corp., a zero-emissions transportation and energy solutions, achieved a noteworthy milestone in 2023 with the production of 42 Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) through its HYLA brand. Out of this total, 35 units were wholesaled to dealers in the U.S. and Canada.
Steve Girsky, CEO of Nikola stated, "What an effort by our dedicated and passionate team, to create — and deliver — what we believe is the only U.S.-designed and assembled Class 8 hydrogen fuel cell electric truck on the road today".
Among the seven trucks not wholesaled, three are currently undergoing an extended field test with a fleet partner, two are in continued validation and engineering phases, and two are utilized for service training and customer demonstrations.
Nikola's FCEV boasts an impressive range of up to 500 miles and a quick estimated fueling time of as low as 20 minutes. The company asserts that its truck stands out with one of the longest ranges among all commercially available zero tailpipe emission Class 8 trucks. The applications of the FCEV are diverse, spanning drayage, intermodal, metro-regional truckload, less-than-truckload, and certain specialized hauling use cases.
Girsky emphasized the company's commitment to revolutionizing goods delivery in North America, stating, "Our goal is to introduce a better, cleaner way to deliver goods to the North American market in a reliable package." Highlighting the success of FCEV customer pilot programs, he noted a remarkable truck uptime of 98%, a crucial factor for efficient fleet usage.
The FCEVs are assembled in Coolidge, Arizona, and entered serial production on July 31, 2023, with a commercial launch following on September 28.
